No industry focuses so much attention on looks as the entertainment industry. Due to the power of narratives and literary tropes an actor’s personal looks and hairstyle can have great implications. It affects their image, direction of their career and the kind of roles they get. Baldness therefore presents its own challenges and many actors have utilized their lack of hair to craft their image and turned it into an asset. Some of the greatest actors are indeed bald.
Sir Patrick Stewart: Instantly recognizable as Captain Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation is and arguably the best captain of Starfleet. Once a reporter asked Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, “Surely they would have cured baldness by the 24th century.” He replied, In the 24th century, they wouldn’t care.”
Samuel L Jackson: For someone who used to sport an impressive afro, he surely sports the bald look with equal machismo. Having played Mace Windu in Star Wars, Nick Fury in Marvel Universe and many roles in Tarantino movies, he has become a mature and accomplished actor.
Sean Connery: With his quintessential British suave, he is arguably the best actor to have played James Bond on screen- a role which he played with a toupee. Even in his old age he exudes masculinity and is undeniably a sex symbol.
Sir Ben Kingsley: Recipient of an Oscar for playing Mahatma Gandhi on screen and a knighthood, he is one of the greatest actors of our times. He is also known for his roles in Schindler’s List and Hugo more recently.
